TREE CONDITIONS

Maintenance and removal of street trees in Superior Township is generally the responsibility of the Washtenaw County Road Commission.  The road commission will only remove a tree if it’s obstructing traffic or has fallen into the traveled portion of the highway.  In some cases homeowner associations will trim or remove a street tree upon the request of a co-owner.  The township will remove a tree if and only if the tree interferes with publicly owned water or sewer mains, and the main lies within a public easement.  Water and Sewer leads which become clogged because of tree roots are the responsibility of the homeowner.   Trees in the front yard between the sidewalk and front of the house, the side yards and the back yard are the responsibility of the homeowner.  Tree branches which cross yard boundaries shall be trimmed back if requested by a neighbor.

Trees can be a great investment in property but carries an obligation upon the homeowner to exercise proper care and caution while it grows, and the tree must be removed if the tree is diseased, dead or causing a public nuisance or public danger.

If this is a street tree issue you can contact the Washtenaw County Road Commission at 734.761.1500 or by at wcrc@wcroads.org.
