Governor Whitmer Establishes Michigan Parents’ Council

Governor Gretchen Whitmer created the Michigan Parents’ Council to more formally bring parents into the policymaking process. The council will build on Governor Whitmer’s work to include the parent perspective into the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the education budget, and streamline how parent recommendations are included in Michigan’s education budget. The council will represent parents from across Michigan and host a series of regional parent roundtables to gather input.

This state-level council will consist of seven parents or family members from across Michigan, and host a series of roundtables with parents in every region of the state to gather input and recommendations for Michigan’s next education budget.

Applications for the Michigan Parents’ Council are due August 8. Please consider applying if you are:

  • A parent or family member with children in early childhood learning programs, elementary, middle, and/or high school
  • A parent or family member with students who have an Individualized Education Plan or Individualized Service Plan, who speak English as a second language, or who are in foster or kinship care

In addition to the Michigan Parents’ Council, the State is looking for Michiganders to serve as appointees on several other boards and commissions.
