Overview

If you have ever wondered how to become more active in government, there are plenty of opportunities for you that do not involve running for elected office. Michigan has 83 counties, 274 cities, and 1,242 townships. During an election, each of these units of government requires a staff of paid workers to work at the polls.

Become a Precinct Inspector

Precinct inspectors are paid election workers who assist voters at polling places on Election Day. To apply, registered voters must submit an Election Inspector Application to their local clerk. The application includes your name, address, date of birth, political party preference, and any relevant qualifications such as education or prior experience.

To qualify:

  • You must be a registered voter in Michigan.

  • You cannot serve if you are a candidate, a member of a candidate’s immediate family, a challenger, or a member of a local Board of Canvassers.

  • Individuals convicted of a felony or an election-related crime are not eligible.

Precinct inspectors are covered by the federal Minimum Wage Act.

 

Election inspectors must commit to working Election Day from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 10:00 p.m. and attend a mandatory certification training class. Wages start at $14.00 per hour.

Returning Inspectors

If you have previously worked a Charter Township of Superior election as a precinct inspector or chairperson, there is no need to reapply. Simply email elections@superior-twp.org to sign up again.
