Message from Clerk Findley
As we are close to the end of campaign season, with four weeks to go until the Tuesday, August 6, State Primary, it is essential for all residents to understand the regulations regarding campaign signage and materials. Please take note of the following important guidelines as residents you have the right to know:
1. Proper Placement of Campaign Signs:
Campaign signs should not be placed in the right of way or near/on county road signs.
Only the Washtenaw County Road Commission has the authority to remove campaign signs unless they are on private property.
Note: Prospect Rd. “Schofield Farms” has authorized permission for specific sign placement along with Private businesses/property owners on Plymouth Road.
2. Unauthorized Signs on Private Property:
Residents have the right to remove any campaign signs placed on their property without their permission.
If you notice a campaign sign that is solitary (not a cluster of signs) and not on private property, it is likely illegally placed.
3. Identifying Legal vs. Illegal Sign Placement:
Areas with a high concentration of campaign signs are designated for legal placement.
Once again if, you see signs that are not in a batch and not on private property these are most likely illegally placed and the candidate is illegally campaigning.
These are individuals who are trying to take advantage of the space to receive more attention. It is unfair for those who are legally campaigning.
Several examples of illegal sign placements include the two roundabouts on Geddes & Superior Rd. and Geddes & Ridge Rd., the entrance to Bromley Park condominiums on Geddes & Wexford, the entrance to Tanglewood, MacArthur Blvd. close the edge of a resident’s personal property (giving the perception that it’s on private property and it is not). Additionally, on MacArthur Blvd. & Heather Lane, Andover & Geddes, Harris & Ascot, and Prospect & Vreeland.
4. Campaign Materials in Mailboxes:
No campaign materials should be placed in private mailboxes without postage. This is a violation of federal law.
539 U.S.C. 3008 and 3010 and Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) C032 and C033. In 1934, Congress enacted a law known as the “mailbox restriction” that prohibits anyone from placing mailable matter without postage into any mailbox.
5. Best Practices for Residents:
A general rule of thumb is that an area with only two or three isolated campaign signs not on private property is typically illegal.
If you believe a sign along the road is a safety hazard, submit a service request at wcroads.org or the WCRC Fix It App.
Let’s work together to ensure a fair and lawful campaign season. If you have any questions or concerns regarding campaign signage or materials, please do not hesitate to contact me at (734) 896-3589.
Thank you for your cooperation and support!
